Ordered this cap and if I had actually seen it before ordering I would not have purchased it. Not like the Old Jones caps. The peak was very flimsy material and could not be shaped. the fit was bad due to the crown being to large allowing the cap to sit on the ears. The fit was better with the ear flaps down. Very disappointed! This is not a $45.00 cap and far from LL's standards. Had to return it.
I bought this hat to wear when it's raining and I must say it's even better than that...because of the earflaps tucked away inside I found that the flap really stops the wind from my ears and therefore keeps my head warn and dry. I would be remiss if I don't mention something about the size of the hat...because I wear a size 7-7 i/4 hat I ordered a 'large' and it is large, sitting over my ears. I now believe I should have ordered a medium which would sit better on my head. So, here's what I'm going to do...order a medium in a different color and write another review to clear up any confusion.
I like Jones-style hats for their rain protection and short bills that give just enough shade but don't interfere with rifle scopes, and they are really getting hard to find. Plus I have a larger than "one-size-fits-most" head and this one in XL fits fine - it gets four stars and is a keeper just for fitting me. This is definitely a cold weather hat - wish it came in an uninsulated version, just a shell, gore-tex and a thin cotton jesrsey liner, like my 20 year old Duxbak "lucky hat" that fianlly gave up the ghost during spring turkey season. If you are looking for a warm weather hat, or one for hunting that involves a lot of walking (like spring turkey or upland bird hunting), I think this will be too warm. As others have noted, there is some excess material in the crown, with all the insulation and so forth, but this seems to be less noticeable in the XL size.
