I needed an outer layer for XC Skiing in Vermont. These were a second try after another popular brand did not work well. These pants over a sub-layer kept me warm and dry hiking in subzero weather and deep snow. The extra length in the legs did a great job keeping snow out of my boots. My only criticism was that the rear end was a bit too baggy. These were the XL size. I also ordered the Large but they were definitely too tight so I returned them.
These are perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities. They are made of a substantial layer of stretchy warm material for insulation, but also water and wind resistant. As for fit, the medium size fit me perfectly: I'm 5'8", 155 lbs. and in pants I wear a 33" waist and about 30" length. I think there's room for some wool long underwear under these pants if necessary, for extreme cold. For ordinary cold, above 10 degrees, these are fine by themselves, especially if you're active.
We were cross country skiing in very cold -20 wind chill weather. My husband was warm and cozy in these pants. He is also short legged and these pants are not endlessly long, so do not have to be altered. They are nice and stretchy for outdoor activity.
