I purchased a commando sweater about twenty years ago and still own it and wear it. It developed a couple of moth holes last summer which I repaired but I decided to buy an new one. The new model is significantly lighter in weight, not nearly as closely knitted and a shade or two different in color. The wool on the new one is a bit like rag wool but this might just be the looser knit. Its not as warm as the old version either. However, the new sweater because of its lighter color and looser knit looks less military and might be more appropriate for indoor wear. I would recommend this sweater; its not as good as it used to be, but then what is?
I believe this sweater is identical to the US Marine Corps "Wooly Pully" sweaters, authorized for uniform wear in the '70's. I loved them then, love this one now. It's both warm and trim, good looking, good wearing, and warm. My favorite sweater!
I've worn Commando Sweaters of one brand or another for at least 30 years, and it is my favorite style.
The LLBean sweater is fully the equivalent of any Commando style sweater on the market, even from so-called "military suppliers".
I am 6'1" tall, and weigh about 220 lbs. soaking wet; 35-36 in. sleeve length, but my knuckles don't drag the ground! The XL Tall fits perfectly.
Durable and warm, Great for layering, and keeps my upper body warm, standing out in 20 degree weather while photographing automobile Wintercross events.
Dunno who's crazier...me or the competing drivers !
This sweater is awesome. High quality wool, looks great and is warm. I wear this everywhere from work (office environment) to grouse hunting (under a coat). I personally do not mind this sweater against my bare arms worn over a tee shirt.
