This is definitely the best setup I've come across for a fishing vest! Easy access to pockets, built in fly holders, and most of all... outstanding back support!
Full disclosure: I don't fish. At least unless I'm with a buddy who insists on it. I ordered this piece to test my work-in progress theory that I can use a 'tactical vest'-type apparatus to carry everything I need for a light and fast overnight pack trip.
Backpacks are inherently limiting--you need access to things as you walk. Why have to take your pack off every time you have to don a rain jacket or poncho? So I'm consumed with the idea that a military-style 'tactical vest' with large capacity front pockets (for carrying 'frequent access' gear and also to counter balance all the weight normally carried solely by the back).
This type of system allows one to walk more upright and reduces fatigue. The shortage of storage space makes you a very careful planner re what to pack, and keeps you from over-stressing the device.
I have used this on two shake-down hikes so far carrying everything I thought I would need to comfortably sustain a one-night trip (lightweight hammock, summer sleeping quilt, rain gear, sno-peak stove and tea billy, dehydrated evening meal, etc), and on distances from 6-8 miles per day. Total weight with water was about 20 lbs. I had no shoulder soreness and less back fatigue (I am 53) at end of day than with normal backpack.
Limitations: The back bladder panel works okay but lacks a secure fastener for the top flap--the velcro is weak and won't hold if you carry more than a water bladder in there. Even so, despite a fast pace my tea billy didn't come bouncing out--I lost no provisions.
You've got to be creative and stuff things in the nooks and crannies--but it works and remains pretty comfortable. Also this device needs a daisy chain or a bungy on the back, so you can lash on or stash/dry a garment on the run. The front pockets, as bulky as they can get, did not interfere with arm swing or the free movement/placement of trekking pole(s).
Not enough capacity for longer trips or cold weather gear but that's okay for now. Can't say how durable this would be with regular use at @ 20lbs of stress.
I strongly encourage the R&D people in the LL Bean 'backpacks" department to pursue this idea further--the counterweight in the front of the body is a great improvement on typical day-packs, and the access to frequently needed gear is a huge step in the right direction.
ProsDurable, Performing as Expected, good for long days, no rod holder
This vest was recommended to me from a fellow fisherman and a fall trip in Pennsylvania. It has a pocket in the back that fits a 70 oz water reservoir very nicely although it makes the pack a bit heavy. The belt takes all the weight off your shoulders which is very nice on long wade trips. The front is a bit bulky but easy to get use to if you have been using a lighter weight vest. It might keep you a bit warm in the summer but keeping the reservoir cool might help. I was border lined in size but purchased the the large. The regular might have been tight with heavy waders. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. Only thing I would add is a rod holder.
