I had not used a pole before, but a hike into the Grand Canyon seemed to recommend it. It was very useful. Not only was it there when the footing was difficult, but it adjusted easily and quickly to meet my needs. It took some fo the strain off of my knees. My second trip into the Canyon, I used two poles and they worked great as well, but I missed the use of the monopod for my camera. For light overnights or day hiking, I take this pole, since it serves many purposes well.
