I just tried to put a new battery in the remote, it worked for 2 minutes and stopped. My sister has the same problem. We will be returning the lanterns, another christmas gift for us.
Contrary to other reviews, we had no problems with the remote. The lantern is small enough to not take a ton of space (remote clips right on it) in packing, hangs in tent via hook, and remote is very handy for "lights out". Slept with remote in tent pocket for easy reach if needed at night. When not in tent at night (sitting around fire), hung remote outside of tent near door and easily turned on light w/remote (like a light switch). Perfect little lantern that give a lot of light without de-juicing your batteries. Would definitely recommend for camping or even household power outages!
We hung this light in the entryway of our tent and it worked really well. It is mini in size but provides ample light. It is great to approach your tent, click the remote, and have a sense of where your entryway is (and not tripping over the tent fly tie-downs).
Love the remote, it works great. We used it in our tent. I carried the remote in my pocket and was able to turn on light before entering the tent. I'm considering another one. I would love to also have one slightly larger.
