ProsDurable, Great Value, Performing as Expected, exceeded my expectations, comfortable & rugged!
This pack reminds me of the 1800's, when items were built to last. I've owned it for several years and "yes" I've tested it. And with each tough test it has passed with flying colors. Well worth every penny, and more. To L. L. Bean my sincere gratitude.
Great pack for day hikes. It doesn't have an H harness on the the straps and the belt is not entirely useful (unless you like having a belt around your ribs), but I never use those features on other packs anyway, so this pack is awesome for me.
The top flap straps are sewn down so cinching something like a tent to the top isn't really doable without rigging something up yourself.
It is very durable and the water proofing has worked well. I have found that 35-40 pound loads are relatively comfortable which is fine for long day hikes. Some have commented on the weight of the pack but I haven't noticed it to be significantly heavier than anything else.
Obviously this isn't a pack for extended trips, but the classic style of this pack can't be beat.
ProsDurable, Great Value, Performing as Expected, looks great
I have taken this bag with me to use as a carry on to avoid checking in luggage on my trips to Hawaii and Mexico and it was perfect. Holds a lot and is very well made. I love the rugged looks with the leather straps which puts it above the nylon backpacks you see everywhere. There are a lot of pockets to stick stuff. I got my first one 3 years ago and I'm now buying a second one for my husband to have.
I used this bag for a one week train trip to Michigan---took Amtrak 1300 miles. I really liked the bag. The bag was roomy and was not too heavy for me, even when I walked long distances in Union Station in Chicago. I am a 54 year old woman (somewhat out of shape) and was worried that I would not do well with a backpack. I loved having free hands. I got the matching small rucksack and loved that too.
