Packing a full-size backpack on a day hike is fruitless. The pack was purchased for day hikes here in NC Blue Ridge Parkway and for traveling overseas. It’s big enough to put anything I might need on an aircraft, and has EZ access to 3 outside compartments. One on each side, and one in the center I put my first aid Kit in. The bag has a large opening at the top with a draw string to close it . It’s also vary comfortable on my back.
All the gear I carry in this bag looks 50 years old. Lots of it really is, so the bag and the gear all go together. I do wish the lining had been made of tougher stuff, and the shell too for that matter. I hope it never does get dragged behind a Land Rover for 50 miles, but I'd like to feel that it would survive if it did.
The side pockets are not quite the right size for my water bottle and thermos, nor do my binoculars quite fit in the pocket I'd prefer, but short of making my own, this will do.
taking it to NY tomorrow for 9 days as my main bag. i'm packing light like an astronaut, so we'll see how it goes. plan on using it daily for work after this trip.
