I love this pack but not for hiking. Would never hike a substantial distance with it. Great carry-on bag. Great for overnighters. Cool book bag. I just love waxed cotton and oil cloth. It feels substantial and rustic. The construction of this pack is high quality. The pockets are roomy. Organized enough but not over-engineered with gimmicks. It's the pack equivalent of a flannel sleeping bag -- nostalgic, low-tech and wonderful.
After searching everywhere for a canvas messenger bag (thinking it would be the perfect travel bag) and coming up empty, a trip to Bean saved us from the hassle of more shopping. This bag was perfect for a trip (flying) to Texas for a family visit. It worked as a secure carryon bag and a great pack for a couple nights camping. The pack has many pockets; zipper’s, buckles and places to tuck away everything imaginable. Placing valuables in the sack did not concern us they were safe and buckled into place. The bag has a leather base and waterproof upper that protects items stored inside. You can leave electronics and items for quick easy access on the outside due to the many pockets without disturbing the inside of the pack. A great durable product for many uses.
I've purchased traditional bags only to find that the traditional looking hardware sinple hid modern closures. This is not the case with this bag. The hardware is the real deal.
This is everything that a traditional day pack should be plus ventilation! There is also a good belt that tucks away.
A great bag for everyday use and an occasional hike.
