We are very disappointed in the Manatee in terms of its performance. It's a poor tracker and feels like we are trying to paddle through molasses. We have no quarrel with the build > Perception builds a fine, rugged kayak though having no bulkhead for the stern hatch is ridiculous/absurd. We have owned 2 11.5 Perceptions for the past 9 years and have been more than satisfied with them, but at 50 lbs each they are becoming quite difficult to cartop and portage for 2 people in their late 60's so we wanted something lighter which is what the Manatee offered at 40 lbs each. We are very experienced kayakers here on the Cape, and we've used our kayaks far more than most people. We have paddled just about everywhere in all kinds of conditions so I feel we are well qualified to write a review. The 2 Manatees have been relegated to the cellar and the 11.5's are back outside, and we will just tolerate their weight. Better to get exhausted cartopping and portaging rather than paddling where the fun is supposed to be.
Kayak arrived in good shape in a huge bubble wrap bag with paddle and cover inside the boat. Have had it on water and it handles nicely. Reasonably light to carry and cartop. Seat is comfortable and adjustable. Foot pegs are easy to adjust. Paddle is good quality, as it the cockpit cover. Paddle breaks down into two halves and can be feathered. I live 200 miles from the drop ship factory (this is a Perception boat made for Bean) and it took 3 weeks to get here by Freight. Tracking it required a call to Bean who then put me in touch with the trucking company by phone.
ProsDurable, Great Value, Performing as Expected, good beginner kayak
It's my first kayak, so I have no basis for comparison, but so far it's been fantastic. It's light enough for me to load/unload myself (5'4" woman). I've had it on both small lakes and rivers and it's very stable and easy to maneuver. I got the kayak console (also from Bean) and it fits this model well and is very handy for fishing. Also got the Bean kayak cart and that works well also. I couldn't be happier with this so far.
My wife & I got 2 of these Manatee packages at the beginning of April, and we had to wait til the ice went out and the water warmed up a bit before we could try them. Today was the maiden voyage.
I must say they are a good value, I was quite impressed. Seat is comfortable, and easy to adjust footpedals while on the water. They move easily through the water and the tracking is not too bad for a smaller boat.
All in all we are happy with our purchase and would recommend this product, ty L.L. Bean
