I've used the eTrex Venture HC for geocaching for a couple of years and never had any problems with it. I usually geocache with a group, and its accuracy is right there with the higher priced units. It is sturdy, easy to use and read in sunlight, and has good battery life. It also comes with a usb cable for downloading cache information directly from the computer, which saves a lot of time. The information can be entered manually by toggling, but downloads are much faster and easier. It is easy to mark and project waypoints with this unit. This model does not have an SD card slot for loading large maps, which I have not needed. If you want to download more maps such as for wilderness hiking use, you might need a model that has a card slot. The basemap that comes with these outdoor handheld units is very basic without much detail. This is not a substitute for an automotive gps. Also, the eTrexes do not have touchscreens and they do not show the entire cache description, just the GC id, cache name and owner, and the coordinates. The Dakotas and Oregons have touchscreens and download more detail on the caches for paperless geocaching. For the cost, this is a great geocaching gps. Prices vary a lot for the same model, so do shop around for the best price.
This is an excellent GPS. locks on to satellites quickly and the menus and buttons are very intuitive.
the basemap is lousy. it couldn't show me significant islands in a significant river. buying the garmin topo map package is a must. look for bundled deals.
