This is my third Gore-Tex outer shell purchased in the last 18 years. When I picked up the package, I thought Bean sent the wrong product! It is one-quarter the weight of my previous shells and absolutely impervious to the elements.
I love the new hood adjustment mechanism...one hand operation and you have a snug fit. Also two internal pockets are great for extra gear.
The cut is a little more steamlined than the previous model, but not enough to need to move up one size.
This jacket can handle anything mother nature can dish out. An incredible jacket at a great price!
In my opinion, I found the Ascent jacket very well made, however, I was disappointed with the "weight" of the jacket. The Ascent appeared to billed as a heavy winter shell, like the old school North Face, I thought that was what I was purchasing. For harsh winter element applications I do not like the cuffs (1"), hood cinches, waist line and overall weight of the fabric. Aside from that it is an excellent product if you are looking for a three season tech jacket, perfect seams, weather proof zippers, wide front zipper fly, deep hood, etc..
This is the third one I've sent back due to zipper failure. Always a struggle to zip this jacket. Zipper often doesn't start correctly and jams. Takes numerous tries before it starts. Otherwise this jacket is a great backcountry performer!
I really like this jacket. It's durable without being stiff. Construction is exceptional. My only wish is that it had some kind of mesh liner for a bit more comfort and moisture absorption.
