ProsDurable, Great Value, Comfortable, Performing as Expected
This is a fantastic gortex shell and cheaper than all other "pro shell" jackets. It is fitted for outdoor activities so do not expect a bulky, loose jacket. I am 5'9" 180 lbs. and the medium is a perfect fit over a down sweater or fleece jacket. Not designed to layer over heavy, bulky jackets. Bomb proof and water tight for all outdoor activities. Buy it....
I bought this jacket after trying several less expensive and inferior rain jackets. The Ascent jacket is extremely versatile, and can be used for a wide variety of activities from sitting in a football stadium to trail running or hiking. There are several venting options and the Gore-Tex provides a water-proof barrier while remaining breathable to keep you from getting too swampy when active. The exterior pockets are adequate in size and I have used the large interior mesh pocket for everything from water bottles, snacks and camera lenses. The jacket is also very packable and so far appears to be durable. When paired with the ascent PrimaLoft hooded jacket, they make a warm, waterproof and breathable combo.
ProsGreat Value, Comfortable, Performing as Expected
I purchased my men's Ascent Gore-Tex Pro-Shell based on reviews from other buyers and comparison against the competition.
The jacket is very nice and construction is excellent. I was concerned originally about not being able to remove the hood but that has not been a problem. I am 5'10" 190lbs and the large fits perfectly and has enough room to layer up without being constrained but it is not baggy.
By itself it is not really warm at all but it does a great job at stopping wind and rain.
It was surprisingly lightweight, which is a blessing in disquise as it packs down very well and the hood actually makes a good pack sack. Just roll it up from the bottom and stuff it in the hood.
I've had system coats from other manufacturers with a zip-in fleece liner and found that with the fleece removed the extra zippers and heavier fabrics were too heavy for backpacking or to easily fit in a suitcase full of clothes. I feel like this shell is much more versatile and will be wearable through more seasons with the right base layers underneath.
I originally wanted the black colored model, which had sold out, so I decided to purchase the yellow & gray model and the color is very pleasing and is definitely more visible, which is good for safety while walking my dog.
I've only had the jacket for a couple of weeks now but so far I am very pleased with the purchase. I plan on buying the Ascent fleece to wear under this shell and will update my review upon its purchase.
If you are looking for a good lightweight Gore-Tex Pro-Shell then I don't think you can go wrong with this jacket. I also plan on using this jacket in the cooler months while boating and expect it to be perfect for keeping me dry and windchill at bay.
Pros:
Lightweight Great fit Dry Windproof Breathable
Cons: None really, but if you are expecting this to be warm on its own it is not.
Things that would be nice to have: It would be nice to have attachments for a fleece in the cuffs so the sleeves do not pull out.
ProsDurable, Great Value, Comfortable, Performing as Expected, really multi-purpose
I bought this shell over a year ago. I have had shells from all top manufacturers and this is equal or better! Very light weight. Super quality. All the pockets I need in all the right places. Great in spring and fall but I wear it all winter (in MN) with down layers underneath.
