I bought this hat for my dad, who spends a lot of time outside during the winter (which in Connecticut can be really cold). It is very warm and soft. The ear flaps are what makes it especially nice- they cover the ears completely and keep them warm. He also has a larger-size head, and this hat fits perfectly. Many other hats have been too small. There is an adjustable draw-string in the back so that the hat fits snugly. The ear flaps also adjust as there is Velcro where they meet under the chin.
Lightweight, very comfortable to wear (though this S/M model does run a little small). Very importantly it is waterproof and windproof which adds to the overall warmth. Not at all stylish but it's the best for dry warmth. I've tried many and this is definitely the best for worst the very Winter weather.
I recently purchased a Maine warden hat and have been wearing it for about two weeks. I have been walking to work for many years, and of ALL the hats/hoods I have used, this one is the warmest. The shell and the design cut wind penetration to zero. I also enjoy the fleece lining as opposed to other hats which have a rabbit fur lining. If you need to be outdoors for any amount of time, I strongly recommend the purchase of this hat!
