This hat keeps me pretty warm because of the large earflaps that also wrap around the back of the neck. If you are making a hat with those features, it really should have more insulation. Someone ordering a hat like this wants a really warm one - I mean a wind chill of 25 degrees below zero kind of hat. It's not quite that warm. Also, it would be better if it came in more sizes. It's adjustable with a draw string, which is pretty neat, but combining L and XL into one hat is a little too much. Still, it's a pretty good winter hat.
I bought the medium and large version of this hat three years ago and could not get a good fit. The medium was two small and the large too big. I ordered two L/XL this year hoping that the sizing would have been corrected. Unfortunately they are still too big and with the adjustment tightened to the max they still sit annoyingly at the eyebrow driving you crazy and you can't cinch up the chin straps as tight as you would like to keep the wind out. Need to create a large size somewhere in between the present offerings. This size could be ok for someone who always needs XL headwear. The fleece in these is also lighter and not nearly as warm as was three years ago. Regretfully I think all these will be good for is in the backpack in anticipation of encountering three season storms.
I've tried a lot of different types of hats to keep warm in sub-zero temperatures and blistering winds.....all of the others had problems. But this hat has it all....cozy warm, lightweight, water & wind proof, protects your ears, chin and back of neck, and even has a small visor to ward off rain & snow. My only complaint is it's a little pricey. But overall, well worth the cost for the comfort.
Don't buy this hat. It is a cheapened version of the same hat I bought 3-5 years ago. The new hat has a thinner, lighter-weight fleece lining that doesn't keep a person as warm as my older hat.
