I bought both the medium and the large messenger bags hoping to find a good fit for my 5'4" daughter. The large was way too big and the strap too long even when adjusted to sit comfortably. The medium was unable to fit more than a couple of folders and binder and 2 books. The shoulder strap length on the medium was great but it needed to have a lot more depth for maybe gym clothes and other items. Both bags had great construction but unhappily, I sent both back. I would suggest that LLBean resize these bags, considering that middle school and HS kids will be carrying lots of stuff, but don't need the excessive strap length of the bigger bag.

I got the Heatwave Messenger Bag for the upcoming school year. I already have loaded it up! As soon as I got it, I loved it! I got the large size and it seems to be a perfect fit! There are tons of little pockets on the inside of the flap and 2 easily accessible outside pockets. The strap is wide and heavily padded, so it is SUPER COMFY!!! Plus there is a pocket on the strap for a cell phone! The inside is spacious and roomy. I have had other messenger bags from big-name companies and compared to this, the seem flimsy and uncomfortable. I also got the mid-blue color and I love it! Overall, this bag is my favorite of all messengers.
