I just got a size 8 for my average sized 5.5 year old. Thank you, previous reviewers, for letting me know to order at least one size up. The sleeves are a bit long but otherwise fits well. If the sizing can be fixed, this would be a 5-star three season jacket for our mild NJ winters.
I purchased 2 of these jackets 4 years ago (I’m a thrifty shopper so ordered large so I could get my monies worth- and I HAVE). They wore them from day 1. The Velcro on the sleeve helped when the sleeves where too long, now they are getting too short so it's time for new jackets. We live in Anchorage Alaska and these are the perfect kids jackets. They are our 3 season jacket. They have everything a mom expects from a good jacket. Fleece lining, smooth inner sleeve liner for easy on/off, wind proof, breathable, zip pockets, reflective piping, velcro wrists, water resistant, zips up past your chin. For winter play I do have the kids wear long sleeve shirt underneath -or if it's very cold and the kids will not be active I will layer a sweatshirt under, and it’s still a perfect fit. In 4 years I have only had to have one zipper fixed and there are a few small tear holes. A little stain stick and it washes up great. As a side note, I purchased a 3T used LLBean jacket at consignment shop 8 yrs ago and all three of my kids have worn that jacket for 2 seasons each and it is STILL going strong w/no problem. I will be handing it down to my friends child. Any Jacket I have gotten is well worth the purchase.
This was my first time buying a winter jacket from LL Bean and I was pleased to see the temp ratings for the jackets online to make shopping easier. After looking at a bunch of coats and considering his activity level, layers, etc, I bought this coat for my 5 year old son as a winter coat. It was fine for fall and early winter, but even with a couple of layers underneath he was cold in the jacket when the weather dipped below 30. Now I have to go out and buy a new winter coat--very disappointed!
This jacket is wonderful I have a 10 year old son & a 5 year old daughter. They both have grown up wearing llbean outerwear. This jacket is the best, it has a nice little lip in the back to keep there bottoms covered easy to use zippers and it washes up to nicely. I would reccomend this jacket over and over again.
