I've had the jacket for 3 weeks and so far, it's performed just as advertised. I've never had a jacket this light for skiing, hiking, etc. I'm cold all the time so I'm not sure it will work for -25F., but I've been comfortable at 10F. with a stiff wind blowing.
When I purchased the L.L. Bean 850 fill down jacket, I was looking for a very light-weight jacket to take on backpacking trips. Our group tends to find some very cold places to go each September. While in Maryland this Christmas, I took my Grandson to the Ice! exhibit put on by the Gaylord Hotel in Oxon City, Maryland. The tent that the exhibit is in is cooled to 9 degrees with a nice artificial wind from all the blowers off the freezing units! While there were parkas available, I wore only my Bean down jacket and a shirt on my upper body, and was very comfortable. I am very impressed with the warmth of this jacket!
I purchased this jacket for a winter trip to Germany. This jacket fits like a glove (I ordered the XL Tall), and it kept me toasty warm on the 10,000 foot Zugspitze in late December. Is that proof enough?
As stated in the details, this jacket is very light. It is also very warm (I tend to be "warm" most of the time though too). Wore it shopping with a chamois shirt underneath and was glad it was mostly "in and out" shopping as I would have gotten heated up quickly. Was outside for two hours (Michigan winter) and was like toast! Only drawback: sleeves were almost too long - I rolled the cuff back and was fine - and the elastic is not tight enough around the sleeves so air could get in. Again, I rolled the cuff under so it tightened up a bit.
