"Years ago, after a brutally cold winter, I was determined not to be cold again. The answer then was in a Bean Rugged Ridge Parka. After several years of solid and dependable service, it was time to replace my old parka.
After looking again to the Rugged Ridge, I decided instead to upgrade to full down and an even better temperature rating and went with the Baxter State Parka.
It's hard to believe you can improve on perfection, but this parka is even warmer than my last, and worth every one of the few extra dollars it costs.
The Baxter State Parka is the warmest coat I've ever worn. It's got all the features one expects in a parka, and every detail is nearly perfect. It is roomy enough to allow for layering, including chunky sweaters, without allowing any chilling updrafts. It fits perfectly as sized and without being too long at the bottom as some parkas tend to be, and all while being lightweight.
The only feature that could be improved upon is the faux fur trim on the hood. I'd rather real coyote fur as are traditional on arctic parkas, but this is a minor point of personal preference.
This winter has been a mild one so far, but the Baxter State Parka has proven itself during every cold snap. I'm confident next winter's normal temps will be no challenge."

"This parka has to be the best thing that has happened to Alaskan winters. The -45 comfort rating must just be a suggestion because when it hits 62 below 0 here in Fairbanks I would never be able to tell with this coat. Light and flexible, I can be outside as long as I want in whatever weather mother nature decides to throw my way."

"I recently purchased two of these parkas.
Overall the parkas are very well made with one exception. There needs to be a fur ruff on the hood and not the synthetic fur ruff.
L.L. Bean should sell a line of zip-off (FUR RUFFS) as options to the parkas with zip-off ruffs."

"I was unsure about this jacket at first. With it being a parka the pockets intended for your hands on this particular jacket are at the wrong angle. You would either have to be a knuckle dragger with incredibly long arms or you would need an extra joint in your arm to make it to the horizontal position needed to comfortably put your hands in the fleece lined pockets. If you could reach those pockets they aren't big enough to put a gloved hand in them without exposing your wrists to the cold. That being the case I hate the lower lined pockets. With time running out for purchasing supplies for my trip I rolled the dice and took this jacket along with me. I purchased a large which is not snug, but it fit well. It is perfect to wear a few layers underneath without hindering your movement. The sleeve length is perfect and the inner extra sleeve is nice and keeps the cold wind out. The upper chest pockets were my choice when putting my hands in the pockets. They are large enough to put gloved hands in without much trouble. These pockets are also lined with fleece, but they are not warm enough to go ungloved in very cold temperatures. This jacket is warm. I was in very cold temperatures around 32ºF plus or minus, and was never cold. I was not overjoyed with the double front zipper because it is normally hard to zip up, but I fell in love with the ability to cool off by zipping up the lower zipper. Also it came in handy when taking photos in crouched positions. Normally it wouldn't be a deal breaker but the fact that there are button closures for the storm flap instead of velcro is a nice detail. Let's face it when you are in cold weather you are going to be wearing gloves. Gloves arch nemesis is velcro. Gloves stick to it and make it difficult to get in and out of the jacket. The hood is nice and has a great adjustment strap to raise the visor so you don't feel like you are wearing blinders. The chest pocket near the main zipper is amazing. It is easy to access and works perfectly for a cell phone so you don't have to dig in your pants pocket. Weatherproof-wise I was in snow and sleet and never had a problem with being wet. Overall this jacket is almost perfection and it won me over. If the lower pockets were at a 45º angle so I could reach them it would have been a 5 star jacket."

"This is really a great Parka for warmth and fits well. Enough room for layering underneath. I would recommend this except for one important detail....The Main zipper is cheap and causes me problems attempting to unzip the Parker. Sometimes takes a few minutes to accomplish this task and twice have had to it pull off over my head to continue working on unzipping.
Why would anyone create such a nice Parker and use a terrible plastic zipper like this. It is an expensive product and seems to be an easy fix!!"

"The coat is high quality, looks nice, and is warm.
It is also short. I am 6'6" and ordered (and received) an Extra Large Tall. It was about 3 inches too short in the sleeves. It also did not drop past my rear at all. I have non-Tall coats that are longer. If you are of shorter or stockier build, go for it. Tall people if you want to try it order at least 2 sizes large."

"My wife bought me this great parka when she realized my non LL Bean winter parka started to fall apart after two seasons. This parka is quality from the hood to the hem. It is many degrees warmer than my old parka, which is much thicker and heavier, and has many more features. I wasn't too thrilled about the fur but LL Bean made the remedy simple, it can be removed and replaced in seconds and maybe I'll try it when the weather gets really cold. Once again another superior LL Bean product."

"After driving an hour to my nearest store to get this jacket, the store personnel went out of their way to accommodate me. Since the store's smallest size was a Large, they called their main office to track down a Small size that would fit me, and had it shipped to my house within days. "I recently travelled to northern Aroostook county from my current home in southeast Virginia. As I finalized my trip , I realized that my winter outerwear options were quite limited, having lived more than 20 years in Virginia. The Baxter State Parka arrived 3 days before my trip and rapidly became my new best "friend" during the 6 day visit up North. It's loaded with pockets and the warmth it provides is superb. Low temps were minus 12 with a "refreshing" breeze, but I was unaffected by it. The removable hood is another fine feature."

"Got a large size, because no medium was listed as available. However, with the waist and hip adjustments, fits fine. Also pick up a few inches of coverage over my legs, being 5'7". This is one of those LLB products that perform just perfectly. Lowest temp. to date has been 4 F., -10 F with windchill. After trecking across a frozen lake with the collies in the face of NNW at 12 mph, and with only a light-weight, long sleeve T [80%poly/20%Merino] underneath, I was so warm - and dry - that I had to unzip a few inches. The faux fur on the hood may not look functional, but it does effectively protect my face from the wind. Deep deep pockets on the outside are great for carrying anything, including containers of coffee or tea, dog leashes, etc. etc. Very convenient. Repels wet snow/freezing rain mix, of course, which came in handy at the end of January. Other features we can't take for granted are solid, like the heavy duty, no snag zipper. Finally, with the 15% discount, a gift certificate from a prior purchase and the free shipping, the cost was unbeatable."

"This coat is AMAZING. LLB has thought of everything, from the waist cinch to all of the helpful inside and outside pockets. But this coat is not for sissies: this coat is SUPER warm. It's like getting into a very soft, hefty blanket -- like one of those cuddle balls for dogs. It's wonderful. "I purchased this for my husband as a christmas/wedding anniversary gift. The moment we entered the store, he found it, and said he already loved it, but, of course, he tried it on first. He especially likes the various pockets, and I feel that the hood is useful in very cold and inclement weather. Also the fur wraps around the neck to provide further warmth if you wear just the plain part of the hood. The color was really good for him, and the fit very close to perfect.
