Bought this bag for my 4th grader. She loves it. I was unhappy with the monogramming on the bag - it is small and hard to see. Needs to be larger and in a different color thread (was not able to choose thread color when ordered). Great bag, but don't spend the extra to get it monogrammed.
We LOVE this bag! It is roomy and more than large enough for our 8 year old to use in place of a traditional backpack. It is also better for her as it fits over her shoulder so no back aches from a too heavy backpack. And she LOVES the colors. It is the coolest!

Purchased the Heatwave Messenger Bag - Medium, Cobalt Splash for my 5th grade daughter to replaced her Critter Pack that she has been using since 1st grade. She wanted something more "grown up" and "cool". She loves the colors and says it fits all of her things. I love the quality of L.L.Bean's products.
I bought the smaller version for my almost 9 year old daughter and she really likes it. Great colors (pink + blues) and great pattern (argyle). Bought the matching lunchbox as well.
Too early to tell yet on the durability. I may revisit this site to give an update mid-school year.
