I love these boots, I took them right out of the box and hiked for an hour. Before these boots I was hiking and fell in the frozen river, long storey short, I developed frost bite on two toes. My doctor said I had to have a great pair of boots that are going to keep my feet dry. Well I found them! I cross rivers, mud, snow, you name it and my feet are as dry as when I left. I'm about to order my 4th pair. These boots are made for hikin'. They have taken me up and down all of the 4,000 footers in NH, with nary a blister or sore toe. They do NOT have to be broken in. Just put them on and go. I would highly recommend them for everything from NH rough rocky trails to any terrain that requires a durable yet comfortable boot.
Reviews were right - these were comfortable right out of the box. My custom orthotics fit well, plenty of room for toes, extra comfy with L.L. Bean hiking socks. Definitely glad I made this purchase. The soles do hold even a little bit of mud pretty well, so be sure to knock them together pretty hard to get rid of the mud before walking into the house. Boot scraper only gets the surface stuff.

I purchased a size 10 (my size) and it is true to size. I originally ordered a 9.5 because while trying on boots in other stores found everything to fit big. Well I hiked Mt. Whitney in the 9.5 and got blisters, but loved them anyway. I decided to try my real size. (10) and just got back from a 3 day backpack across the sierras and wanted to tell all that these are the best boots ever! I wore them out of the box and they were great. I know that this is not what you want to do but I knew that my 9.5's were going to give me blisters so I thought what the heck, lets go for the unknown and see. Couldn't be any worse right? These are the best, comfortable, thick sole (great when carrying a heavy pack) kept my feet dry and whatever this vibram sole stuff is is great. They don't slip a bit. I love them and look forward to many hiking trips to come! Thanks LLBean!
