I've had these boots for years ...only took them out during hunting season. They were comfortable right out of the box. But I still did my break in period just in case. I decided this year to wear them beginning in the fall and they are just a great comfortable boot feet never get wet in the rain or snow in New York
Having a size 14 narrow foot, finding boots that fit well is a chore. Bean's Cresta hikers are fantastic. Mine are 5 years old and fit like a glove and wear like iron. I wear a size 14 running shoe, but 13B crestas fits perfectly. I hope Bean never discontinues this item.
Like most of the reviewers, I find these Cresta Boots to be great performers and a very good value. I felt they required a brief break-in period (a couple of 2-hours hikes should do it). After that, they are extremely comfortable, not at all heavy for their sturdiness and, most important, will keep your feet warm and dry in snow. They stand up well to rough trails and provide good traction and support in a variety of conditions. For day-hikes, it's hard to beat these boots.
My first pair of these boots I purchased in 1998. They have been through desert and snow, work and play. I love them. My feet stay dry and comfortable. Even after 11 years they do not stink (actually smelled quite nice for about 8 years). However, they did wear down and cannot be re-soled. Easily a 5 star experience.
I got a 2nd pair for my 40th b-day in 2009. They did not fit as well and did not smell the same as my old pair. Maybe the leather in Romania is treated w/ different oils. I wore them around town for a few weeks but, alas, they never did conform to my feet like the old pair. They also did not breath very well as this pair was always stinky after wearing. Regretfully, they were returned. Thankfully the LL Bean return policy hasn't changed beacuse apparently the boots have. Pair #2 only gets 2 stars. Still recommend them due to easy returns...
