This jacket and wool button-in liner are perfect for year round use. Rugged and stylish. Size L fits my 40" belly fine and even just makes it with the liner in.
The fabric and construction are everything I could ask for, but the design has some strange features. It really needs five buttons instead of four. if you leave the top button open, the next one is halfway down your chest.
The pockets are the really poor part of the design. The way that the hand pockets are integrated with the cargo pockets is clever, with the bottom part of the hand pockets forming the flap for the cargo pockets. But it's uncomfortable to put your hands in those pockets, because they're so high up on your chest, rather than down near your waistline. Your wrists end up angled down from your arms, leaving a gap between the pocket and sleeve where cold air gets in. Forget about walking or even standing with your hands in these coat pockets. Other coats in this class have dual-compartment pockets with side entry for your hands, and they work much better.
This coat is great for outdoor activities. I wore it while camping in southern Missouri this winter and even used it as a blanket overnight. Like other LLBean gear, you can tell it's made with good materials and they didn't skimp on anything.
Great fit with a bit of room for a sweater, but doesn't feel "baggy". Length is just right, about mid-thigh, which allows for free movement without exposure to wind and cold. Wore this Field Coat with a down vest underneath comfortably in 17degF weather to clear snow off cars, patio and driveway - perfect warmth and weight. Rugged duck cotton and hefty seams, should last for years and years. The wool/nylon liner is thick, soft and warm. Sleeves contain "polartech" covered with quilted nylon (again, nice and warm). Corduroy collar and cuffs are a nice touch. Surprisingly well-made at this price point. Another solid winner from LL Bean.
