I had a similar coat for many years, sold by another label. However, they no longer made the coat with a button front. The old coat was showing wear at the cuffs and was becoming a little snug with heavy sweaters or sweatshirts beneath. Every one seems to making their Field/Barn coats with zippers now. Until I found this one from LL Bean. Very happy with the fit and finish of this coat. It is very well made and is true to size. I hope this one lasts as long as my "old friend" did.
I just bought my second one. The first one served well during biting cold and winters of unending snow. It is a great knocking around coat on a Saturday morning. It is as tough as nails. Finally had to retire it as I ripped a huge hole in it climbing a fence (don't ask).
This is my second Field Coat. After about 20 years or so my old one seems to have gotten a bit snug if I try to layer under it. Other than that, and a bit of fading, it is good as new. No loose threads, no lost buttons. Got the new one so I can layer up when it gets colder. The old one will still do duty in milder weather. ( probably for 20 more years!). Great fit, plenty of really usable pockets, and tough as nails fabric.
Nice jacket. Seems like good quality. Haven't worn it in our winter yet. My suggestion is they incorporate a 2-way zipper as if history proves itself, the buttons will come loose. Also, a zipper would certainly help keep out more of the cold wind, whereas the buttons do have gaps. Because of the way the coat is made now, I cannot add a zipper. Too bad. If it had a zipper, I would give it 5 out of 5. For now, I will give it a 3-4. Also, no inside pockets...bummer. Be nice to get my phone out of the front pockets and into a more secure inside pocket. The more I'm writing, the more I'm leaning towards returning the jacket, because of the reasons stated.
