I was greatly concerned about the size of this Field Coat, based on the comments here. I hate going through the exchange ordeal. I debated to go a size smaller, but at the last minute I selected my normal size, XL. For reference, I am 5ft. 10in. tall, and weigh in at 220, and one might call me stocky, (in case my weight didn't give that away!). With the wool liner in, the coat fits me like a charm. I *might* be able to wear a sweater under the coat and it not be too restricting, but I didn't try. I just tried it on with a t-shirt on and was very happy with the fit. It is quite warm, as I started to feel warm within minutes. I've had my eye on this coat for years and I'm glad I finally made the purchase. I do wish the pockets were more functional, and the pocket on the chest a little bigger, but these are minor to me. I'm sorry if I've muddy the waters on the size, but hopefully with my measurements you can get an idea what to expect.
I've been wanting to buy one of these coats for quite some time. I finally broke down and bought one and I'm so glad I did. It is a quality coat that looks and feels great. Purchased this coat back in 1995, olive, with button-in wool liner. What a great coat! Still going strong after 19 years, wearing it throughout the fall, winters, and early spring in the Piedmont of NC. That sums it up, durability-wise. As for warmth, it's warm enough so that I rarely have to break out the down parka. Starting to wear a bit on the elbows and cuffs, but no holes yet. It's so comfortable, I look forward to the weather turning cooler so that I can start wearing it again.
I bought this jacket for my son, who is 22 and a college student. He had several soft shells but needed a really warm coat for all the snow and ice we have had this year. He absolutely loves this coat! I bought the one with the wool lining, so it is very warm and he likes the classic style. My Dad wore LL Bean hunting boots for over 60 years, as he was an avid quail hunter. I have a pair I've had for 18 years and they still look like new! I have never purchased anything from LL Bean that has not been excellent quality and durable. I expect my son will enjoy this coat for many years!
