Only one minor flaw, September 12, 2009
By SoutheasternMass from Swansea, MA

"Well we had this lamp for almost three years. We love love loved it and got tons of compliments. But after a while the switch on the bulb began to tighten more and more. Eventually the only way we could turn it on and off was to unplug it from the wall."

Coastal Hurricane Lamp, July 25, 2009
By Seashellsbytheseashore from Ontario

"We originally purchased one of these lamps in the small size to go in our African-themed family room. It looked terrific, blending right in as if it were a real lantern. But our bedroom needed new lamps, too, so we moved the lamp to our bedroom to try it out and it was even better there! We bought a second one and they look great. Because I’m a bit sensitive to light, we found most candelabra bulbs too strong for the lower, glass-encased part; so we used small clear bulbs that you would use in a nightlight. The effect is gorgeous: at night, we turn on those only when we’re not in the room, and it’s like looking at two small candles burning in lanterns. Our room has a coastal look, with black nightstands and the Flying Geese quilt on the bed, plus Flying Geese throw pillows. We’re very happy with all our purchases and I can’t recommend these lamps too much. Also, they arrived at our Canadian address in perfect condition."

shade looks like cardboard, July 23, 2009
By KareninVA from VA

"I like the lamp base very much. It is just what we need. However, the shade looks like plain cardboard with the light off and is too opaque with the light on to provide adequate lighting. I will have to replace the shade. The kids thought it was wrapped in cardboard but unfortunately that was the actual shade."

I love these lamps., May 26, 2009
By Brunosmom from Ringwood, NJ

"I purchased both the large and small version of this lamp. My Husband and I love ithem. It is solid. It sits firmly in place, it does not feel flimsy or that it would knock over easily as so many lamps do. At night, I use only the low watt bottom part of the lamp as a night light. The glass enclosing that part of the lamp has the solid appearance of antique glass. The shade is the perfect size and texture and a perfect compliment. I have had occasion to purchase shades and know how expensive brand new shades of this quality are. I highly recommend these lamps."

Coastal Hurricane Lamp, May 26, 2009
By BirdiePing from Lake Erie, Ohio

"I agree with the previous review on the "cheesey" crackle finish. I was shocked when I opened the box. Also, to insert a lower bulb, a glass panel must be raised up. This seems cheaply designed & problematic, I would suggest a hinged door. The glass edges are sharp, not rounded or glazed. Also, I will need to replace the shade for a lighter one. Altho I like the antiquity of the darker shade, it is very opaque and doesn't allow much light to pass through. Charming lamp, needs more refining at the design phase."

Highly recommended for a seaside home, March 12, 2009
By My2Cents from Boston MA

"This lamp fits perfectly in our seaside cottage.

We purchased the large size. I must say that it was a little smaller than we had anticipated, and the shade is definately a little dark. However, both are of very good quality.

The base is a nice, heavy metal, and the finish is a black crackle (with an antique color beneath the crackle). I would recommend a flicker flame bulb in the bottom and a higher than usual wattage in the upper lamp bulb if you're using it as a reading lamp.

It took almost 2 weeks to get our lamp, but the wait was worth while. We love it and are considering purchasing the small one now as a hallway light!

Coastal Hurricane Lamps - Worth the Price, February 22, 2009
By CapeTeacherCoach from South Dennis, MA

"I bought the smaller size lamp for a larger upstairs bedroom. Although it was too small for this room I kept it as I really liked the authentic antique look of this lamp. I am now using it in a smaller downstairs bedroom and have purchased the larger size for the upstairs bedroom. It is very easy to remove the glass to install/replace the light bulbs. This truly is a great lamp. It gives a nice mellow glow when it is on and is very appealing. While the cost of these lamps might be a factor when deciding to purchase....trust me. This lamp worth every penny. As mentioned in other previews, great care was given to shipping this product. Thank you again for another great looking high quality product."

Coastal Hurricane Lamp, February 18, 2009
By MadeinUSAshopper from Niles, OH

"I am very pleased with this lamp. It is excellent quality and should last a long time. I saw in the LL Bean catalogue that it is made in the USA and I was pleased about that. The cord is very long and the lamp is heavy enough that is will not be knocked over. I bought the smaller version, but I am considering buying the larger version soon. Shipping was very prompt. It came in several days."

Coastal Hurricane Lamp, January 28, 2009
By awolgal from Nashville, TN

"I absolutely LOVE this lamp. The fact that you can turn on the small candlelight inside by itself as well as with the larger light is a wonderful feature. I put a flicker light inside which puts out such a soothing glow when turned on at night by itself. Although this lamp is more costly than many, I feel it is well worth it."

Shades are very dark, January 18, 2009
By Tess21401 from Annapolis, MD

"I like the look of this lamp very much -- from a distance! The "crackling" finsish looks a bit cheesy up close. Also, the shades are VERY dark, so it does not project enough light for good reading. I had to order shades from another place in order to get enough light to read by. Also, I think the candle part at the bottom is kind of harsh, not cozy and relaxing. Considering how pricy the lamp is, I was disappointed."

Geat Nautical Theme, December 27, 2008
By ThequeenofLLBean from Fairhaven, MA

"This Lamp is a true to a Coastal Hurricane Lamp as you will get. The quality is superior to all you will see. I have viewed many before making my choice. The only thing I didn't care for was the black specking on the lamp. I would have preferred something else. I also purchased a floor lamp along with this lamp. Looks great! If you want a great lamp you will have to buy this one. All store lamps I have looked at before buying was cheap and unsturdy . This purchase was site unseen, LL Bean's quality is the best."

Beautiful lamp is useful & decorative accessory !, December 19, 2008
By BookLover2 from Meriden, CT

"I bought this lamp at the same time that I ordered a cheaper version from another well known on line retailer. After receiving this lamp, I looked at the other one on-line (it was backordered) and canceled the order. The LL Bean small hurricane lamp just looked so much better and is so practical too.
I know the directions say to use a standard 150 watt bulb, but to save energy I use an equivalent wattage compact fluorescent bulb. Actually I am using a 23 watt compact fluorescent which is equivalent to a standard 100 degree watt bulb. I know you can get equivalent wattage compact fluorescent bulbs equal to 150 watts also, if interested.
Beautiful lamp in the living room, great to read by, nice candle night light. I bought a 3 watt FLICKER compact fluorescent candelabra bulb for the candlestick (equivalent wattage is 27 watts) and it looks so authentic. The flicker bulb makes it look as if a candle is burning. Beautiful lamp. The wires on the glass are bowed so they stick out a bit - really well made. I highly recommend it.
Packed expertly in a box within a box and lots of brown paper to protect it, arrived safely via FedEx.
If I could suggest anything to improve it, it would be to make the upper bulb a 3 way bulb. Some people may like that. The 3 way switch lights JUST the candlestick, OR JUST the upper light OR both. That is a nice feature also.
Also, be sure to enlarge the picture on the website. I didn't do it and didn't read the wording very well and was surprised to see that the lamp is not only black, but is crackled, so it looks distressed white and black. If you enlarge the image, you will see it better. I am not a fan of crackle, so I am thinking about painting the "crackles' black, but will use it like this for a while.

If you want a beautiful hurricane lamp, you can end your search, this is the one.

Hurricane Lamp, December 14, 2008

Perfect lamps, October 26, 2008
By llbeanmakesmehappy from Fayetteville, NC

"I was hesitant to purchase these lamps because of the price but I looked around at many local stores and online stores and there are just none that compare. They are so beautiful and make my room complete. I love the three choices of lighting and when you have just the bottom lit it is so tranquil. I bought two large for my living room and am so thankful I bought them, they are worth every penny."
