I read the reviews, didn't believe the bad ones, but should have seen it coming. This jacket is huge - a 38 short must be for the really rotund - and incredibly boxy. For the pleasure of inbound and outbound shipping costs, I learned these words of wisdom, which I pass on to you: Do not buy this product.
A million thanks to the gentleman from Minnesota! I too take a 42 Long, but, following his example, ordered a 40 Regular--which fits me to a tee! The problem may lie in the metric the Thai manufactory is using.
This jacket promised much and eventually delivered, but I was not prepared for the sizing/styling issues. LLBean was most cooperative in seeing my order fulfilled. I am 5'8, weigh 163, 33 waist; I run regularly. My blazer size is 41 Regular, depending on the cut so I ordered a 40 Regular: it draped me like a sail. Called Bean; they Quick Exchanged it for a 38 Regular; the sleeves and tails were long by 1-1/2 to two inches, another quick exchange I landed a size that fits: 38 Short.
These jackets are essentially not structured. Little side tapering. Best for very casual times, or for traveling--ie airline travel. I paired with the tropic weight chinos as separates. Be careful though! They are generously sized. The 44R that I ordered was sized more like a 44 long. Both the sleeves and the body length of the coat were 3" longer than one of my blazers. I had to send it back for a 44S. I am a true 44R: 5'10" tall with a 43 1/2" chest.
