We have had issues with two of these backpacks. We returned the first backpack, and unfortunately the replacement backpack has had the same issue and now needs to be returned. There is a manufacturing issue with the width of the fabric over the zipper. The fabric repeatedly gets stuck in the zipper, to the point that the backpack becomes unusable. If not for this issue I would recommend the backpack, because the fabric is sturdy and kids like the patterns. Perhaps an adult who can maneuver zippers would not have an issue, but it is not a good fit for a kid who is rapidly zipping and unzipping their backpack
Our family has used backpacks from several catalog companies, all with good to great results. I decided to try LL Bean this year as my child preferred their patterns. Aside from outstanding durability, I expect backpacks with dark bottoms/dark patterns and mesh water bottle pockets. I can't believe I didn't notice that this backpack does not have a place for a water bottle of any type.
I would recommend to Bean that they add a water bottle holder to the outside of the Original Book Pack. I'm mad at myself for not realizing this feature is only available on certain bags. If we hadn't already ordered this one and begun using it, I would exchange it for the Explorer Back Pack.
