I am a 38 waist which fits into the XL category but I find the XL trunks are much too tight. I now order XXL and they fit really nice and I can also tie them to tighten them a little. Take it from someone who has ten pairs of these, order a size larger and you'll love them.
I use them for water aerobics and lap swimming. They are great trunks, good fit, and good color retention (I rinse them off after getting out of the pool).
BUT, the pockets become air pockets in the water. The little bit of nylon mesh at the bottom of the pocket is insufficient. LL Bean should change the side pockets to all nylon mesh.
These shorts were made with the outdoor man in mind. Great for biking, kayaking, swimming, mountain running or just relaxing. Soft, easy fit thats cool no matter what the temperature or humidity. Dry quickly and repel a bit of rain. Best part is the mesh lining that is a good fit. The pockets carry keys and phone well and they offer a mesh bottom that lets water out quickly.
