well, I have to admit this is a gorgeous clock with a really cool retro look. Had an old moonbeam but decided to replace when I read this one had a muted backlight - only problem with my old one is it's lit up all the time (no on/off option) and is just too bright if you like to sleep in a dark bedroom. So this seemed like a great improvement having a backlight on/off setting. I read all the reviews and was hesitant to purchase as it seemed the quality control is off in this model. But chanced it and am sorry to say am returning it. I opened the box, plugged it in and set the backlight to "on" to see if it truly is a more muted light than my current moonbeam. The backlight came on for a second and promptly went out and would not turn back on. Didn't even bother to test if the alarm was as horrendously loud as described - put it back in the box and it's going back to LL Bean.
I'm so disappointed. I received this clock one week ago, planning to use it in our guest room. Since plugging it in, it has stopped working 3 times! If I tap the clock, the second hand starts moving again, so it's not a problem with the outlet. I reset it last night because it had stopped, and when I got home at 5:15 today, the clock read 9:40!! It's going back tomorrow!
I love this clock! Power goes out frequently where I live and the back up battery is wonderful. The soft glow of the clock at night is a great night light. Easy to use, easy to see the time.
