I absolutely love this clock. I didn't realize it was electric until I got it out of the box. I have not plugged it in yet, just batteries but I love it. I can't tell if the face lites up with electricity or not. I can't see that it has lit up just on batteries, but that's ok. I like to wake up gently & thoroughly enjoy the 10minute snooze! I got yellow, love it and the clock is much bigger than I expected. I can't say how much I love it. Just like regular Big Bens, you can put the ringer on low which is perfect for me. The last clock I had died but I'm glad it did because the ringer was TOO loud. love the color, yellow is one of my faves, love the ringer, will have to move the dresser to plug it in; I know bummer, huh? But I will do it. Thank you, LLBean!!
If you are looking for a bedside clock that you can reach without getting up, this one may be the one for you - unless you're a poor sleeper like me who needs a quiet and dark room. While this clock is stylish and well made, it "tick tocks" like a wind-up alarm clock from the old days. The product description does not tell you this. Also, while you can chose to have the dial face lit up, there is no way to see where the hands are pointing in a dark room because they are not treated with any glow-in-the-dark paint. So you have to find the button to turn on the dial light to see that it is only 2AM - or have a flashlight handy.
I got this clock for christmas one year because I can sleep through everything. Except this clock. It like blinks light at you for 5 minuets before it starts wailing at you. You will not be able to go back to sleep. It works really well, but I also don't think I have ever hated an alarm clock more than this one. Get it if you have a kid who never wakes up.
Note that one problem we had was that it is so loud that if one of us was using it early in the morning and didn't turn it off within 45 seconds, everybody else was awake too. (we have multiple in our house). So if your rooms are close together and your walls are thin, something to consider.
