I bought many pairs of these socks all in size Extra Large as gifts for my large footed family. I also purchased some in the same size for myself. They have been cursed by the Lycra fairy! Yes each sock is meant to be stretched from only a few inches long to the size of your foot! this is tolerable when actively running about, but cramp inducing agony ir you want to relax in a chilly house after exercise. If these are smushing my modestly size feet, I don't know how the size twelve and up family members even get them on.There is too much tight stretch and not enough wool. Yes they are wooly, but not mammoth even in extra large!
I've been using wool ragg socks as my everyday sock, as well as in my workboots, for 40 years. In the last couple of years, it has become increasingly difficult to find wool ragg socks with a heavy, dense weave like I find on my dwindling collection (due to wear and tear) that probably dates back 5 or 6 years. I have now tried 4 brands in recent months (including these from Bean), and they all feature a less-dense weave. I've put them through the wash 3 times now and though they return to shape, they seem to have very weak elasticity--losing their shape on your leg in a matter of hours. They are also not as warm as my older ones. Indeed, when washing a pair of these in a gentle, front-load washer, the loose weave began to unravel on one of the legs of one sock. I darned it to keep it from getting worse. These are not the rugged, tough wool ragg socks I've counted on all these years and am to the point of giving up the search and moving on to other types of socks. I've always liked these, but not in their current form.
I love these socks, have been buying them for years. I wear a size 10 ladies, so i started buying the large, I think I was getting the mediums before, but because they are wool I want to allow for shrinkage. These are the only socks I hang to dry-I love them so much I don't want them to wear out! I have a problem with wool being itchy but these don't bother me at all. Glad I got the longer length this time as well. Works better with boots.
