I have worn these socks for years, year around. I usually have 6 - 10 pairs on hand all of the time. It seems that the quality has suffered in recent years. All of the comments about wearing out in 90 days, pilling, seam rubbing, etc. are true. This did not happen before. While these annoyances bother me, I have not found another sock that I like better; I just hope L.L. Bean will restore the high quality that I remember.
I was intending to wear these with boots. Sadly they pile and need a shave more often than I do. The shedding in the dryer continued after 5 washes. This is a product that I felt compelled to return. Probably the killer flaw for me was the weak elastic that failed to keep the socks up for me.
