My feet get really cold in the winter so I decided to try a few different types of the wool socks from LL Bean. These are thick and warm, however, extremely itchy! If pulled up over a base layer or worn over a thin pair of socks I can tolerate them, but not on their own as I intended. I like the hiking socks MUCH better and they aren't ichy at all! I wear a size 13 women's athletic shoe and ordered the XL. They fit great and wash well...just wish they weren't so itchy!
I have problems keeping my feet warm, especially sitting in a cold room. I have tried many types of thermal socks, and these are the warmest that I have used. They are not itchy and they can be washed with regular laundry (some thermal socks have very special laundering restrictions).
My father used to buy socks from L.L. Bean as the sizing was good for people with size 13 to 15 feet. As my feet are also large, I ordered these socks in XL. Unfortunately, they don't even fit a size 11 foot well. I am stuck with two pairs of decent socks that simply don't fit, even though they are the largest size offered.
When I first found this item in the catalog, I was very excited to see 100 percent wool rag socks. But I am very disappointed. The extra large men's socks did not fit my husband's size 12 and a half feet. And the pairs that I received as a gift, both were flawed. After a few times of washing, one sock developed a knot in the yarn so it felt like there was a small pebble in my shoe whenever I wore the sock. The second pair also has a flaw. Again, I wore them just five times before a hole showed up on the ankle of all places due to poor construction. The socks were very warm, but the quality is awful. Don't buy these.
