If not for the sizing I would certainly rate these socks 5 stars. My husband required the socks in size XL but I am the one who ends up wearing them and I wear a womans size 61/2 shoe!! I lucked out though because I love these socks! I had always suffered with cold feet in the winter but these socks have been keeping my feet so warm and happy! I use for bed socks and wear them around the house. I wash them inside out, in cold water and allow to air dry. For me they are too thick to wear inside any of my regular sized shoes. Also the socks are less than the 12in. tall they are supposed to be. So, since you have to order up a size or two, my poor hubby will have to do without these wonderful socks. Please, LLBean, fix the sizing for your customers.
I'm glad to see made in the USA but these socks are a poor example of what Bean's Ragg Wool socks used to be. I have some socks that are 20 years old including 1 pair they don't sell anymore that comes most of the way up your calf. Those are much thicker and after that amount of time are almost like new. The new one's myself and my wife bought are much thinner than the old. They are not 12" and you'd better order a size lager or two than normal. We bought a pair of brown Ragg Wool socks a year or two ago and they were almost as good as my old ones. Until they make a change back to the old Ragg wool socks, get it right on the sizing and height, I could not recommend buying
I just got these socks in the mail today, and want to start off by saying that I have NEVER received a package in the mail faster! I ordered these on Monday and live out in the mid-west, and was expecting these to come in a week and a half later. I was surprised when they said they would get here by Friday, and even more surprised that they got here a day early! I took some other reviewers advice regarding the socks running small, and now that I have them you should definitely order a size up! I wear a size 7 1/2 - 8, and the large fits perfectly. I like my socks to have a little bit of wiggle room, and these socks are perfect; comfy and warm (which is important with the mid-west's frigid air).
One heads up though, I order the 12 inch height without really thinking about it, and now that I have seen how high up the leg they go, I would have definitely ordered the 10 inch instead. But it is only a minor problem in the long run.

Received these late afternoon yesterday and immediately put them on - it's a little Arctic here. I continued to wear them overnight as bed socks, and was warm as toast. Love them so much I have just ordered 4 more pair!! I wear a women's 11N shoe, and the large size fits just fine. No excess room, but not tight or too short either.
