I was looking for replacements for very old, worn editions of this Wool, 'ragg' sock - and was gifted a pair. Sorry folks, but this is NOT the same performing sock of past years. The size shrinkage is terrible and the 'weight' - 'thickness' of the weave is nothing close to what I'm trying to replace. This one won't be my choice. If it matters, I use the heavy, wool ragg sock with Red Wing work/walking boots and always use a +/- thin cotton sock underneath. Your mileage may vary, but the combo has always worked for me. I depend upon the coarse weave to provide a a comfortable cushion. These 'new' ones do not have the heft to provide the padding and comfort that I need for a working over-sock. And, as others have noted, the shrinkage is terrible, far more than expected - and promised. The only reason that I considered these was that the older ones were badly worn - the heals are giving out and the bare threads provide no comfort. (Still, not bad for many years of service from ~10 pair. Sorry, but this replacement sock is not even close to the original and it shrinks too much, even when hand-washed and air-dried. I'm going to ask LLB to suggest a better replacement for my worn out ragg socks. With 30+ choices, I cannot figure it out. In the end, this specific sock gets only One Star and these comments. I won't pay $18-420 for this model. I hope that the 'experts' at LLB come up with a better suggestion.
I have been wearing these socks from LL Bean for over 40 years-mainly the 12"( and 16" that they used to carry). These stocked now shrink beyond belief. I wear large and the 6 pairs I bought recently(at Christmas) would barely fit a small child after a few washes. I am hugely disappointed and also upset to hear that the cotton ragg version has now been discontinued. The 100% exchange policy is great but I would prefer to get the information that these are differently sized before I order. Having read some reviews I see I am not alone.
Within less than two months I had holes in the heels of each pair! LLBean was wonderful about sending replacements along with a return slip for me to ship the "holey" ones back to them...easy just put in nearby UPS drop off box. The customer service person I spoke with told me this was a product they have carried for years without problems which is why I decided to "recommend to a friend" and give 4 stars because withstanding the holes they are warm, thick socks I really like. As usual it was a pleasure to deal with customer service! I have always had pleasant, helpful people on the other end of the line whenever I call...not too often now that we can order so easily on line.
I really like these socks. They do there job in keeping my feet warm and dry. I've tried similar thick wool socks that had a roughness to them, but these that LL Bean offer are quite soft. Having to wear them for long periods outdoors this winter, I find them very comfortable.
