I gave the build your own bag just like this one with custom picked colors and fancy personalization to my future mother in law last year for Christmas. She loves it, she has been bragging about it for a year now. She has even carried it as a purse and catch all bag since the day she got it. She loves it so much i'm buying her a new one for Christmas this year! If your debating this bag as a gift or for yourself...go for it!!! :)
I actually made a custom tote bag - size large with long handles, zip top, and an outside pocket (and monogramming). This bag is absolutely wonderful. As a graduate student, I transport my laptop, textbooks, lunch, a sweater, etc etc etc from my apartment to school daily. This bag is big enough for multiple books, and everything else I already listed, and then some. The bag is sturdy, looks great, and achieves that perfect balance of doing what you need it to do, and looking great while doing it. Love this bag, I encourage you to customize your colors - it's fun!
We bought 5 of these small totes. The monograming was beautiful, the totes were well made. We were confused over the size. We saw what we thought were the smallest online not knowing that the small we saw in the store were "Mini's". We ordered the small on line and when we got them they were bigger than we expected. We brought them to the store and explian our confusion with the sizes and the took them back no questions asked and sold us the 5 mini's monogrammed. These bags are great at all sizes, but I wanted to thank LL Bean for their outstanding customer service. Have been a customer for many years. This is why.

I got this in the Medium with long straps at the behest of LL Bean featured reviewer Tallasianx, who suggested that no grown man should carry the other versions of this tote.
I took your advice, and I'm glad I did, because I love the bag, but are you saying that this is the only configuration that I can use?
Is the small too feminine? Is the large too "yuppie mom"? Is the medium with short straps too girly?
