I was torn between the open top vs the zip top Boat and Tote Bags. Ultimately I decided to go with the zip top in order to secure my cargo. When my bag arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to note that the zip top style can also be used as an open tote style. The unzipped portion actually lies neatly against the inside of the bag when the zipper is not in use. I was so pleased with my bag (large with long handles), that I turned right around and ordered one in medium with long handles! The bags appear sturdy and well crafted. The monogramming adds a personal touch. Both bags arrived sooner than estimated. (In fact, one actually shipped out less than an hour after I placed my order...and it was monogrammed!) I read the reviews from other customers and I agree these bags would make excellent gifts for just about anyone and I love the idea of using them as Christmas stockings.
I love these totes! I have an XL zippered in navy, a Large Zippered in regatta blue, and recently purchased (May 1st at 9:30pm) a large open top Boat and Tote in bright pink. All are monogrammed. I keep the two zippered totes in the car for grocery shopping. I normally put 4 cases of sodas in the XL and the tote still looks brand new. There is no lie in their description, the bag can hold more than you can carry. It is truly an excellent,durable bag. I also love that LL bean always has free shipping and returns. As I mentioned, I purchased the open-top bright pink on Sunday--May 1st, and received the tote on Thursday-May 5th, a day earlier than expected delivery day. Excellent!!! I love the bright pink! It stands out. The only thing I noticed is, the monogram is done closer to the top of the bag. Compared to my zippered totes which are closer to the center of the bag. I still love the bag though. Thinking of ordering the mint and red next.
Have had tons of canvas bags—they all break a strap after a while. I found this while cleaning out my grandparents basement— it has to be at least 15 years old.
First used it as a tool bag. Got a real tool bag for the sake of organization, then started using this to lug clay to and from the ceramics studio. Been using it for almost a year now (have even washed it a couple times) and it shows absolutely no wear or stress no matter how much weight—I'm usually carrying 40-80lbs of clay.
Regular handles are nice and short so you can keep the weight closer to you rather than having the bag swing around while walking.
