I am in the process of replacing an antique (10-12 years old) version of this bag with a newer version. I LOVE THIS BAG. The only reason I'm replacing it is because after so many years of heavy use (~25 pounds of gear carried on flights every weekend for about half of each year), it's finally starting to break down.
Don't get me wrong, I still carry it and it's still fully functional. The failure points were the wheels (both stripped off some sort of cover last year, leaving a smaller, noisier but still smooth wheel) and the secondary bag anchor, which was not riveted to the bag as it is in newer versions (it was just stitched to the outer fabric cover; it's pulled a bit loose but still works). So I figure its days are numbered, but after this long and this much abuse, I'm still very happy.
Get one, you won't be disappointed. This is one tough bag.
This is a nice suitcase, with exceptional use of space and storage compartments. Perfect for 3-4 day business trips, without having to check luggage. I have had a bit of trouble with the extension handle, though I'm sure if I took the time to return it to Beans I'd be taken care of. Also, I haven't had the best luck in keeping clothing wrinkle-free in the garment portion of the suitcase...maybe I pack it too full so the other compartment infringes on the garment portion....
I've used this bag for numerous trips, by plane, train and automobile, involving weddings, formal dinners and other events. It kept the garments in the garment bag wrinkle free and has lots room for other items. Even when I pack it full the zipper manages to close.
I bought this carryon for a NYC 2day trip and it was the best. I used the subway to and from the airport to midtown Manhatten and this bag had no problems going up and down all those stairs. I dragged it everywhere and did not any problems. I have other LLbean duffles that still in action after many years. Great product and I recommend highly.
