When both components are worn together this is a substantial parka which will stand up to low temps and high winds. The shell fabric is waterproof. The shell and the goose down liner jacket can be worn separately so you get 2 items of outerwear. The shell can be used as a rain parka or worn over lighter layers in warmer weather and the down jacket can be worn alone in cold, dry weather. The shell parka zips open on the sides so you have greater freedom of movement - for driving. Although I have termed this as "heavy duty" it is no heavier than a medium weight parka - due to its component design it performs like a heavier garment. Both shell and down jacket are of high quality and I would expect them to last through many seasons of use.
I have worn this coat for one winter to date. It is extremely warm at very low temps as well as supurb protection from rain and snow. It is the best winter coat I have owned and would recommend it for anyone who may spend considerable time outdoors in cold weather.
