I bought this jacket in early Dec. and was ready for our Northern Maine cold winter welcome. On Dec. 30 it was -41 degree`s on the shore of Moosehead lake and I could not believe the warmth this jacket provided. This is a great jacket for the cold weather and wind. I bought the Maine Warden Parka just over a year ago. After a couple of wearings, one of the sleeves ripped where the button fastens onto the shell. And today, the zipper broke apart. It's basically unwearable during the rest of the winter. The 3-in-1 jacket makes it more vulnerable for the various pieces to be damaged. I wish the original Maine Warden Parka would be made again -- one piece, gortex, very warm and durable.
Walking dogs is my hobby and this is the perfect coat for the upstate NY winters. Rain, snow, sleet or hail don't penetrate this coat. The hood is shaped so you can still have full vision while it is being worn. The pockets are great for all the leashes and other dog walking stuff I take with me. The zipper is not so long as to have pressure while I am driving in a car. The side zippers also lend to access to cell phone, keys or dog treats. Highly recommended!
I bought this coat because a colleague at work has a Maine Warden's parka and swears by it. His does not have a removable down lining and has an insulated hood. When I saw that the lining is removable, I assumed that the coat was the same in every other way but for this "improvement". Well, it's warm and well-made, but the zip-out lining is only about waist-long although the coat is longer, and I can't figure out for the life of me why they didn't make it as long as the coat. Also, I know the hood is designed to be used when the coat is worn without the lining as well as with it, but I still wish it had some insulation. And unlike my colleague's version of the coat, it does not have a face flap on the hood, something I sorely miss.
To sum up: While this is a good jacket, and warm (at least above the waist), I expected it to be a great jacket. It's not.
