Coat is not near as warm as stated. It would never work at 40 below zero even with a sweater under it. I live in Minnesota and it can really get to 40 below. With the wind chill. it has been close to that several times this year. I will have to pull out my old coat for those days. Besides that problem, I like the coat.
Wow. I can't say enough about this one. I purchased the full lengh model last year in the color "paperwhite" and just bought the 3/4 length model in the color "black." Both feel very light on, offer comfort, wind protection and warmth. They wash well too. I put mine on the delicate cycle and wash it in cold water. Then tumble dry on low. You have to make sure the down is completely dry. It may require running it for two dryer cycles. Just shake out the coat and the down fluffs right back up. No need to take this coat the cleaners folks. LL Bean - please never ever discontinue these. I just love them.
We have had a very cold winter and I needed a good casual coat that would cover my backside. This coat is perfect. Very warm but not bulky. Was afraid I would look like the kid in"Christmas Story" but the coat is actually very thin and very warm. Wish I could have purchased this in black but it was sold out in petite sizes. I purchased the brown which is a nice rich chocolate brown. This is the 3rd LL Bean coat I have purchased and I love all 3 of them. LL Beans colors can get a little off sometimes which is my only complaint.
I've worn this coat for 3 seasons and it is still going strong. Very warm, so I save it for only the coldest days and have another, lighter & shorter jacket to wear when it's a bit warmer. Very lightweight, especially considering how warm it is. I can't understand the reviews that said they were cold wearing this coat...maybe the person has, like, 1% body fat? I'm very lean myself and have always felt spectacularly warm in this coat; warm enough that even on the coldest days, when I put it on to go out, I take off my sweater first and just wear it over a base layer. I took the faux-fur off right away (that is, my dogs did--I guess they thought it was an animal), but I wasn't too wild about it, anyway The hood is warm & I appreciate the softness on my neck behind the zipper when it is zipped all the way up. The inner wrist cuffs have stayed tight & keep the cold out. I like the cell phone pocket. I use it for Carmex & little odds & ends that I want to be there all the time. I haven't had to have it professionally cleaned; I just spot clean areas on the sleeve/cuff area that have gotten dirty, but at the end of each season I have thrown it in the washer on warm with no soap (my washer has a special no-soap-required setting) & put it in the dryer on low with a weight wrapped in old socks that I keep just for this purpose, & when it was done it looked brand-new, sparkling clean & nice & puffy. This is the best coat I've ever had, & I'm sorely tempted to get the full-length version in the same color (periwinkle, my favorite).
