I needed a warm coat that was a bit dressier than my normal hiking gear. This coat is just right for me. It is warm and has enough room in the shoulders and arms for sweaters underneath. I normally wear a L in Bean shirts and pants but always go up to an XL for coats. This was no exception. The XL fit with the extra room I wanted for layers without looking bulky. I would recommend the coat.
I've never had a down coat before, but after last winter in New England, I chose the L.L. Bean Ultra Warm Parka to be ready. It arrived on a 70 degree day, so I can't recommend it for winter, yet. However, the coat is really nice (order a size down as previous reviews say!!!), and seems very toasty. The hood is nice and you can detach it if you don't like it. It is still a little generous size-wise, and I agree that it could benefit from a waist clincher thingy, but I've never been disappointed by Bean, so I'm thinking this coat will keep me very warm this year.
Some reviews said this coat was too big. I found it roomy, which was just what I was looking for. You can comfortably wear it with a sweater underneath it. I had purchased a similar coat from another store in the same size, and found it tight across the shoulders and down the arms. I returned it, and decided to try LLBean. Your coat is perfect.
I bought this coat for my always cold daughter. She is essential personnel where she works so she spends a lot of time scraping icy windows and clearing snow. What a find! But even more than that I love LL Bean. You make it easy to shop. I know when to expect my package. You are the best!
