This coat is supposed to be to -40 but it wasn't very warm at zero. The whole coat is very thin for a down coat - about the thickness of two sweatshirts. The zipper is metal and doesn't work well. Way too expensive for what you get - wouldn't recommend it at all.
This is a great down coat that keeps me warm even in 0 degree weather. It's very soft and comfortable, and I love the purple slate color. It's nice to be the only one in town with a purple down coat instead of the default black coat that everyone seems to wear.
My only advice is to size down. It's VERY generously sized. I normally take a size small, but I was swimming in it. I tried an extra small and it fit perfect, even over layers. To give you an idea, I'm 5'7" and a 34C. Luckily L.L. Bean has an awesome exchange policy!
This coat is moderately warm. A lot of reviewers said it was warm, so I purchased it. It is pretty good at cutting the wind, but at 10 degrees I had to wear at least two warm layers underneath to feel warm enough, and even then my arms felt a little chilled. The coat is nicely made, although the down is not quite evenly distributed. A couple of the cells had very little down in them and were almost flat. As far as fit, I found it ran true to size. Many reviewers complained that it runs big, but I don't agree. I think the real issue is that it is cut straight up and down, so it has a boxy shape. It doesn't taper in at the waist so it's not form fitting. But I am okay with that. I wanted something comfortable. According to the size chart I was supposed to take a small. (I am 5'6" tall, 125 lbs., 35-28-37) But I have rather broad shoulders and know from past experience that sometimes I have to go up in size to accommodate them. So I ordered the medium. It fit just as I expected. It fit perfectly in the shoulders and sleeves, and was slightly big in the hips. The sleeves are cut to allow for movement and are very comfortable. Overall I was happy with the fit and appearance. But the biggest problem with this coat, and the reason I returned it, is the ZIPPER. It has a two-way zipper that you can open from the top or bottom. I would zip the coat shut and the bottom would start opening by itself. Then when I wanted to take the coat off, I couldn't get the zipper to zip down all the way. It would jam at the bottom. I literally had to spend a couple of minutes trying to get the zipper back on track so it would unzip. After dealing with this for a couple of weeks I gave up and returned the coat.
Wish it had a bit more styling to it (kid says "You're wearing a sleeping bag?"). It's not quite that bad, but mine ran pretty large. I got an xl, I'm 5'7" and top- heavy but have lots of room to move. But I needed a coat fast, and wore it tromping all over NYC a few days after blizzard. I agree about the pockets! Could use some extra detailing, too, for $200.
