I first purchased this coat 5 years ago. Wanted another one in black but has been sold out since December in my size. Stopped by the LL Bean store in Yonkers, NY and a great staff checked on line just to see. Alas! Got very lucky and there was one available in my size. Nothing was wrong with the first one but I just wanted another one in a different color. The coat keeps me warm and dry during these cold northeast winters. The only thing I would complain though is that the hood is a little bit small. But then again, I prefer to use my LL bean bomber hat.
As I write this review the coat is "sold out", I hope this coat becomes a standard Bean item because it's that good. I received my coat early in December and waited for colder weather to write my review. Well, we've had 10below zero with a wind weather and I have to say this coat is WARM. Stopped the wind and kept me warm. Exactly what I wanted.
The length is nice, to the mid thigh which keeps the behind warm while outside and sitting on cold seats/in the car. The front pockets are softly lined which is a nice touch. There's extra material at the ends of the sleeves that keeps the wrists warm and cold air from sneaking up the sleeves. Critical when it's very cold and there's a wind.
The neck is high enough to keep the back of the neck warm, and the hood has an excellent wide velcro closure at the neck. I've worn the hood with the fur section folded back and it does stay fairly well. When it was particularly cold with a strong wind I kept the fur forward and the generous sized hood kept my head and sides of my face warm and wind protected. Very nice!
As other reviewers have noted the zipper can stick sometimes at the bottom. I haven't been too annoyed by this because most of the time I just snap the coat shut using the snaps - something that on most coats that have both zippers and snaps isn't feasible because the snaps aren't that strong. Well on this coat the snaps are generous and well placed and usually all that's needed. But if you prefer using a zipper, do note that the bottom can take some adjusting to unzip.
I was ready to order the coat in black, but at the suggestion of one of my teen daughters I ordered the teal/green color. So glad I did! It's a muted color, not "bright" or obnoxious. Looks great especially with black boots and mittens/hat.
I generally wear a medium in coats, ordered a medium and the size was spot on perfect. Comfortable in the arms and shoulders even when driving.
When I ordered the coat in November 2014 it was backordered to early December. Worth the wait. I highly recommend this coat and hope that Bean offers it again next Fall/Winter so that others can purchased this coat.
I bought this coat two months ago and have waited to write a review because it was not cold enough. Today the temperature is touching -20F for the first time, and this coat keeps me warm over the appropriate layers (long underwear & wool sweater) while walking down the street for half an hour. I'm 5"6' 135lb, broad shoulder and the Medium Regular fits me fine with room for medium to thick weight sweater underneath. The hood fits snugly and warm. I don't like the faux fur but I do have to admit that it helps making me toasty in windy and snowy day. This coat is very light weight and the purple color is gorgeous. I also love the zip pockets especially the inside one. However, it would be better if they can make hand pockets deeper, so I can easily put my gloves in (you'll definitely need a gloves/mittens for a really cold day.)
