I bought this for my first grader, who is on the small side. It is perfect for her tiny little body! She prefers to roll it, but you can change it to a carry-on quite easily. There is plenty of room for her books and assignments at this point. An older child (maybe 4th grade and up) may not have enough room. It rolls easily and seems to be able to take the lumps and bumps she gives it. The telescoping handle is easy enough for her to operate by herself. The pattern is adorable and she loves it as do all her little friends. We went with the block lettering for the monogram of her initials, and I wish I would have done the script - the block is pretty narrow and plain. The only drawback, and it's a little one, is the zipper. It's below a flap of sturdy fabric, which makes it a bit difficult to access. I usually take care of this for her in the morning.
The backpack is nice, but not roomy at all. Maybe for k-3, but for the 4th grade, it cannot hold all my sons text books. It states from ages 7-12....NO WAY.....It is stretched to the max. The zipper on this one is tricky as well, it wants to hang on that over flap of material, you know that piece of material that conceals the zipper. He has many struggles with that. If you have a child around 7 yrs, get the teen size, save yourself some money and grief.
Even though the quality is good I am surprised to see how short the handle is on the rolling backpack. For this price I would expect a longer usage from this item.
