I got this bag for my son when he was entering 2nd grade. It worked very well for him that year although it was a little heavy for a little child to handle and maneuver. He used it again in 3rd grade but that year, it was too small (not deep enough) for the amount of books he had to tote. The depth measurement in the item description is misleading because the wheels and handle take up part of that space. There were several times when my son had a very heavy load (22 pounds, plus - yes, I weighed his bag) and the bag could easily handle the weight. The bag is very well constructed - wheels roll easily, turns & steers easily - easy for a little one to handle. This bag has stood up very well for two years against a very active boy - and that says a lot! My only problems with the bag are the limited depth on the interior, the bag is a little heavy for little ones (although it's so easy to roll & steer - it was only an issue getting in/out of car), and the top of the bag is made out of a hard plastic material that doesn't allow any give for larger (taller) books. I think it's time that we move up to the Rolling Deluxe bag.
I purchased this bag for my second grade son who typically can keep a backpack in decent condition for about 3 months... We've had the backpack for over 8 months now, and it still looks great. Often, it's filled to the max, and the zipper is still working fine. We haven't had a problem with the pull handle at all - it's the perfect size for him to be in charge of his own bag. At this rate, this bag will be around for at least 2 more years. Already plan on purchasing another one for my daughter when she gets out of kindergarten.
LLBean backpacks are great construction, but I really liked the older model with the water bottle holder. It worked well and the bottle did not come out. It is a must have for the kids for school. Our older backpack is 2 years old and the bottle holders are still holding strong. My older child loves theirs. I hope they bring that feature back. I wanted a new backpack for my younger child but would like the water bottle holder.
I bought this backpack for my 3rd grader. This backpack has lasted the whole school year and still looks brand new. HOWEVER, THE HANDLE IS VERY SHORT. I would not buy this for children in 4th grade or older. We are giving this backpack away and buying an older kid version for next year.
