I purchased this self powered radio for camping and emergencies. During Irene I lost power for 4 days and this little radio worked like a charm with the 3 AAA Batts. I have a hard time cranking the manual power for 90 seconds for only a few seconds of reception. so I always keep an extra set of AAA's handy. Reception is good even in the mountains of upstate NY. I gave it only 3 stars due to how hard it is to crank the handle for 90 seconds for a very very short reception time.
The radio was very useful as we purchased it just before a hurricane and it performed quite well. One BIG problem - we did not, and could not, purchase an AC adapter through LL Bean and the batteries do not last very long.
This travel radio was essential during the blackout in San Diego last Thursday! I received up to date radio broadcasts from KOGO radio (one of the few stations with a backup generator) all evening. I used the flashlight to walk to the ferry landing to see the city of San Diego in blackout across the bay. And I charged my cell phone! I am going to buy one for all my employees and make sure my family members own one! or two! Thank you LL Bean!

Every feature described in the product description works fine right out of the box. I live in Southeast Pa, and we've had very bad hurricane weather for the past few days. The NOAA station that covers this area tuned in loud and clear. I did have to call the MANUFACTURER for a few tech support answers, and they were polite, patient, talked me through the answers to my questions about various settings (other than the NOAA station) on the radio. I've heard that LL BEAN is no longer selling this radio after the inventory is depleted. Too bad. The MANUFACTURER informed me that this radio will remain in their extensive selection of similar radios. You can buy all sorts of add-on parts for this particular model from the MANUFACTURER. I don't need any add-ons right now. If you want bto buy this radio from LL BEAN, make your move soon. It's on sale now.
