Comparatively, this item is a great value. It has wonderful reception in my area. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone looking for an emergency communication device.
This replaces the previous model that I unfortunately lost on an excursion. It does exactly what I want: weather access when I need it; excellent reception for all my favorite public radio programs; portability and a small footprint. Haven't tested the duration of solar power - for summer, I listen in the shade and power with rechargeable batteries. As far as the cranking effort - yes, it takes some stamina to charge for extended listening. But in a power outage, one has the time and incentive to do that. No complaints.
Before I critique I will say that I recieved mine as a gift and have since purchased 2 others as gifts.
The 2 AAA batteries don't last very long and probably should be AA or 9v. The tuner Knob became disoriented and regardless of my intentions it went spuraticly in one direction only.
I am enjoying this radio because of its ultra portability + its excellent alert channels from the National Weather Service. I listen to them frequently and with great benefit.
Very important household item given the fact that metropolitan Chicago -- where I reside -- has experienced two major electricity blackouts since June 2011.
My sole misgiving is that the manufacturer of the radio provided a booklet of instructions that has tiny print, not good for my 69-year old eyes. I urge LL Bean, which has attached its esteemed label to this product, to urge Eaton to improve upon this.
