I lived in New Zealand for a year and this jacket would have been perfect for keeping off the torrential rain (but I bought it when I moved back to the States). It's heavy and warm and the wool liner can be removed, which makes the jacket perfect for wearing in warmer weather. The length is good, too, and keeps your legs dry. Great jacket!
This was the best raincoat! It was stylish AND practical. The wool lining isn't thick and is great to have. If it's hot, you can take it out. The coat is not bulky at all even with the lining and it packs very nicely or can be easily carried. Having the hood is a godsend. The material is fabulous - water actually beads up on it. In a downpour, your legs below the knee might get wet, but luckily for me it didn't rain that hard. For that reason, I would recommend the longer version if downpours were expected. For such a great coat, the price was worth it.
This is a very comfortable and multi-purpose raincoat. The material is soft and drapes well. With the wool lining it can be used thru 3 seasons, take out the lining and it will take you thru a fourth season. I bought the chocolate which is deep true brown. Very, very happy with this coat.
My wife loves the softness of the material. The Toray material (designed in the UK?) is a highly respected top-line waterproof/breathable system.
We give the coat 5* for it's functionality and look.
But I have to bring the rating down to 4* and echo the other sentiments here that the thin wool liner is useless. Honestly save the money and buy the coat without the liner as it provides next to NOTHING in insulation.
